Center for Continence Care and Pelvic Medicine

Urology Consultants now offers training in behavioral therapy, pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, and biofeedback. Biofeedback is a simple, painless teaching technique, often used with patients who have pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, incontinence, urgency or frequency of urination, difficulty emptying the bladder or pelvic pain.

During the sessions small sensors are used to monitor the function of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Signals from your muscles tightening and relaxing are displayed in a graph format that you can see. The biofeedback specialist will guide you in locating, contracting, relaxing and using your pelvic floor muscles in the correct way.

You will be prescribed a home program of specific exercises. There are no side effects from biofeedback and it can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as medications and surgery.

Urodynamics

A Urodynamic study is an office based test that gives your doctor a detailed look at the function of your bladder much like an EKG gives information about your heart. It is used in the evaluation of urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and neurologic disorders. Urodynamics is helpful in the diagnosis of your urinary condition and in the tailoring of treatment options

Posterior Nerve Stimulation

Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation is a non-drug, non-surgical treatment option for urinary urgency, frequency, and urge urinary incontinence. The therapy involves the placement of a small needle into the skin behind the ankle. Electrical stimulation is then given to the needle and carried by the tibial nerve to the nerves of the pelvis that control your bladder’s reflexes. The treaments are not painful and take about 30 minutes to perform. Studies have shown that between 60 to 80% of patients will have improvement in their urinary symptoms.
